E. L. was born and raised, with his older sister, by Everett Sr. and Sandra Adams. He left home after graduating from West Charlotte High School to attend Phillips Academy-Andover Preparatory School in Andover, MA to pursue his love of basketball. At this time, E. L. not only had to adjust to living away from family, but faced his first encounter with academic difficulty. Concurrently, he was also dealing with his parents’ divorce. While dealing with these life obstacles, E. L. had to develop the skills to cope with his circumstances. As a result, he had to develop strategies to allow for self-reflection and skills to become comfortable with disappointment. E. L. learned how to manage emotions in more positive ways and better understood the importance of problem solving. It would be these same tools that allowed for E. L. to handle future undesirable circumstances of life.

L. struggled with studying due to a lack of interest in his chosen program. E. L. was able to use his strategies to manage the dissatisfaction, confusion and uncertainty that he was feeling. School took a positive turn when he had a forensic psychology course. E. L. began to realize his interest in human behavior. This course steered E. L. down a new academic path and he began to work towards a double major in Psychology and Sociology.
