Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

01

How can therapy help?

Therapy can be helpful when an individual’s mental health and well-being becomes impacted by circumstances they are having a challenge with. Therapy offers a non-judgmental, safe space where they can speak honestly and openly with validation. This will then allow clients to explore perspectives to take on new approaches, ideas, behaviors or practices that will allow for better well-being and overall functioning. This will also help to empower an individual to face challenges and manage overwhelming situations in a better way.

02

What can I expect at the start  of therapy?

Therapy always starts with an intake session that allows the therapist to better understand the presenting concerns of a client, ask questions and create an initial course of action. The following session often consists of rapport building which will then allow for the client and therapist to discuss their concerns comfortably. A client-centered approach is the scope through which therapy takes place and looks to cater to an individual’s personal story, personality and challenges that they face.

03

How much does therapy cost?

The charges fees aligned with the standards of the Ontario College of Psychologists (i.e., $210 per billable hour).

04

Will my insurance cover therapy costs?

If you have health insurance, check with your provider to see if they will cover the cost of therapy/counseling. Some insurance companies will only pay for part of the cost or have a limit on how much they will pay. They might also require a referral from your primary care doctor or another healthcare professional. Payments are made just before or after the session and then a signed receipt is given to the client to then submit to their benefits provider.

05

How can an assessment help?

An assessment is beneficial in understanding the learning profile (i.e., strengths and weaknesses) and some barriers your child has in learning or in their social emotional functioning. Assessments are comprehensive and can help to discover specific challenges to then help with establishing the appropriate intervention for your child. There is no preparation required for an assessment. To explain to your child, let them know they will be asked to participate in games, complete some tasks, have a conversation and possibly draw some items. Comfort is key and to help, they can bring some toys or stuffed animals place beside them. There will also be time for snacks to break.

06

What does an assessment include?

- Intake Interview (1 hour)
- Ability & Achievement testing (3-6 hours depending on the assessment, e.g., psychoeducational assessment, ADHD assessment or mental health assessment)
- Administration & scoring of emotional/behavioral/social rating scales (1 hour)
- Writing of a comprehensive report (again, varies based on the specific type of assessment)
- Feedback meeting (1 hour)
